Surviving Crisis

‘In the event of an emergency, put your own mask on first….’

You know the story.

Remember the second half of it though:

‘…….before you help others’.

Not ‘instead of helping others’.

‘Put your own mask on first’ is not about being self-centred.

It’s a call to service.

In times of catastrophe stay healthy – not as an act of hyper-individualism, but as an act of community.

Healthy, we can help others back to health.

The time you take to draw, or paint, or sing or dance, is not indulgence – it makes you robust enough to serve.

Your creativity is not a way to ignore the world, it makes you fit for service in the world.

Some serve through their art.

Some serve because the time they carve out for their creativity makes them healthy enough to be of service to the world.

Either way, creativity is oxygen.

Never has it been more important.

A storm of stupidity, selfishness and viciousness is breaking in the world. Criminals, liars, psychopaths, narcicists and kleptomaniacs are in charge everywhere.

Many of the passengers around us are cheering the imminent catastrophe. They’ve watched videos on youtube and decided gravity’s a scam, and the ground we’re hurtling towards doesn’t exist. They want more snacks and a better selection of movies.

The emergency is here.

The plane we’re on is crashing.

Put on your oxygen mask.

Every day.

Do it so that you can serve those around you (human and more-than-human) as this plane hits the ground.
